Senegal is home to Retba Lake, aka Rose Lake, which is naturally pink, because of its high salt content. The water has perfect living conditions for a certain type of microalgae called dunaliella salina. The presence of these organisms is what gives the lake its pink hue. Nestled between the white sand dunes and the Atlantic Ocean, this unique body of water was once the end point of off-road racing, the Dakar Rally.
The three square kilometer Fuchsia lake has been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status since 2005 and is fast becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in Senegal.
The salt content of Lake Retba or Lake Rose, as it is locally known, rivals that of the Dead Sea - exceeding 40% of salinity in some parts - and it is a combination of sun and micro salted seaweed, dunaliella Salina, which turned the water into a brilliant shade of pink strawberry.
The longer you stay inside the lake, the more salt water you have, the higher is the possibilty to get hurt.
